Tips For Dining Out

Dining Out IN Style and Not Losing Your Stride

Appetizers: Empower yourself by avoiding anything fried. If you need more clarification, feel free to ASK!  Also, remember that you can request olive oil for your meal. Restaurants usually have it but will only use it to saute your food if you ask. Good choices include mixed salads, raw or steamed fish or shellfish, grilled vegetables, or broth-based soups. Share one appetizer for 2 or 3 people so you know your portion will be small, or skip it if there are no healthy choices. Remember, the Mediterranean diet is known for its health benefits, so you're making a good choice by dining out.

Entrees

Choose from poultry, fish, lean pork (tenderloin or center cut), or vegetarian options. Beef dishes are most likely higher-fat, higher-calorie choices. If you choose beef, choose a leaner cut, such as filet mignon, tenderloin, sirloin, or flank.

Be very careful of the sauces used in the dish. Ask questions: Is there cream in the sauce? Is it an oil-based sauce? Is there butter in the sauce? If yes, choose something else, ask for the sauce on the side, or a substitute sauce.

Remember that many restaurants are flexible and can alter their dishes according to your dietary needs. If the sauce contains any of the above high-fat ingredients, ask if it can be made without them or if they can substitute something healthier. For example, if you order a pasta dish with an Alfredo or pink sauce, ask if you can get the dish with regular marinara sauce.

Dessert

Typically, your best option for dessert is a plate of mixed fruits or berries. Enjoy a nice cup of coffee, cappuccino, or herbal tea with skim milk and no sugar. And if you cannot resist something sweet, order one dessert for the whole table and take 1 or 2 bites.

Tips for Requesting Olive Oil at Restaurants

Be Polite and Specific: When requesting olive oil at a restaurant, it's crucial to be clear and polite. Ask your server if the chef could use olive oil instead of vegetable oil in your dish. Be specific about your dietary preferences or health reasons for this request. Remember, a little politeness goes a long way.

It's always helpful to briefly explain why you prefer olive oil, such as health benefits or personal dietary choices. This can help the staff better understand your needs and ensure your meal is prepared to your satisfaction.

Before placing your order, it's a good idea to check the menu for the type of oil used. Don't hesitate to ask your server for clarification if it's not listed. This will help you make an informed decision and ensure your dietary needs are met.

Ask in Advance: If you know you’re going to a specific restaurant, call ahead and ask if they can accommodate your request. This gives the kitchen staff a heads-up and ensures they can prepare accordingly.

Expressing gratitude is not just a courtesy, it's essential. Thanking the staff for accommodating your request can make them more willing to help you out in the future. It's a simple gesture that can make a big difference.

Example Request

"Hi, I have a dietary preference for using olive oil over vegetable oil due to its health benefits. Could the chef prepare my dish using olive oil instead? I’d appreciate it. Thank you!"
